Introducing Xbox Live Database

March 15th, 2011

Xbox LIVE LabsThe site may have seemed inactive in the past few months, but I’ve been hard at work with infrastructure and automation changes in the background.  Some of these changes have been cropping up over the site slowly as I test out new features.

Like all sites, it’s an ever evolving process and I am still implementing features. Now, after all my hard work,  I’m excited to announce my Xbox Live Database.  I created this database because Microsoft has not been very forthcoming when items either drop in price, go on sale, or are delisted.

The Xbox Live Database can be accessed using the quick links under the RSS feed or from it’s home page at Xbox Live Database (XBLDB).  I will be adding additional information to each of the pages that make up the project in the near future, but here is a quick overview.

Gears of War Timeline

March 11th, 2011

At last years San Diego Comic-Con International Epic Games had their annual session focused on Gears of War.  The panel did a walk-thru of the E3 demo explaining all of the new features of Gears of War 3.  After that the voice actors for the new female playable character was announced.  Then the voice actors that would be returning for Gears of War 3 joined the panel.

While this was interesting what I found to be the most interesting part of the presentation was one specific slide that listed the chronological order of the books and games.  I took a picture of the slide but it was not very clear so I have recreated the slide here for reference.

Screenshot and Walkthru Videos Capability

January 30th, 2011

Resident Evil 5 ItemsI recently purchased a Hauppauge HD PVR 1212.  I have successfully tested it and found it capable of recording Xbox 360 game play using the component outputs.  This new toy will allow me to add screen shots and even video to future articles.

I have already started to add screen shots to the my in-progress Resident Evil 5 Item and Emblem Game Guide.

I hope that this will make any guides I make easier to follow and replicate.

Remember all of the guides I write are wiki’s so feel free to update them if you have additional info.

Free Xbox Marketplace List Updated

January 30th, 2011

I have updated  the various Free Xbox Live Marketplace Content lists on the site.

The biggest addition and change is the Free Xbox Live Game Add-ons list.  This list is driven by a database that is updated once a day, so the list will always be up to date.  The only downside is the list currently includes desisted items and I will be working on a method to identify these items.

I will also be updating the “Full” Games and Arcades Games lists to use the same database in the next few weeks.

Xbox 360 250 GB High Definition Compatibility

July 22nd, 2010

I got an interesting question a couple of days ago.  “Is the slim Xbox 360 compatible with generic HD cables?”

The answer is yes and no.  HD cables come in two flavors, component and HDMI.  If you look at the back of the Xbox 360 250 GB you will notice that there are no component cable connectors:

July 8th, 2010

When the Xbox 360 250GB came out I started doing research and trying to find out what the differences between the slim model and the original model.  During my search I found the following excellent Microsoft Knowledge base article:

Description of the Xbox 360 S console

The thing is Microsoft has since pulled the article.  Thank goodness for Google cache:

Portal 2 on PS3

July 5th, 2010

One of the big surprises at E3 this year was the announcement by Gabe Newell, from Valve, that Portal 2 would be coming to BOTH Xbox 360 and PS3 in 2011.  Gabe went on to say that the PS3 is “the most open platform of all the current generation consoles” and that the PS3 version of the PS3 will be the “best version on any console.”
